Dixie County's two incorporated cities include Cross City and Horseshoe Beach. Cross City is the larger of the two cities with around 2,000 residents. Nick Collins, a NFL safety who spent seven years playing for the Green Bay Packers, is a Cross City native and alum of Dixie County High School. Horseshoe Beach, home to only a few hundred residents, is nestled on the brim of the Gulf of Mexico providing Dixie County residents with a great spot to watch the sunset. Horseshoe Beach provides residents with access to the ultimate fishing village lifestyle as well as prime scalloping and fishing opportunities.

Things to Do in Dixie County

The Dixie County Historical Society and Cultural Center, formerly the Old Town Elementary School, hosts events throughout the year including: bluegrass music festivals, performances, and auctions. The Dixie County Historical Society and Cultural Center is a hub of community events draws residents county-wide to participate in the festivities.

Dixie County offers residents a myriad of opportunities to experience nature. Near Old Town, visitors to Dixie County can stop by the City of Hawkinsville which offers patrons a look at a sunken shipwreck in the Suwannee River. The Steinhatchee River Rise Spring is also a popular destination for travelers and serves as a great meeting point for a picnic or nature hike.

Gornto Springs in Old Town, Florida, is a county park that features a 125 foot natural pool and is a popular destination for many. For adventurers seeking an extended stay, the Yellowjacket Camp Ground located in Dixie County offers an extended stay to RV owners and campers. At this location visitors have access to boat ramps in order to get the most out of camping on the riverfront.

Wildlife lovers will be overjoyed to learn that Dixie County is home to the Lower Suwannee Wildlife Refuge. Spanning 53,000 acres, the Lower Suwannee Wildlife Refuge is home to alligators, manatees, deer, bald eagles, and more and is a prime location for bird watching, photography, hunting, and fishing.
